Live Love Hope Believe: A Cancer Warrior’s Journey
Heather Davis Johnson was a 38-year-old mother of two young girls when she was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer. Soon afterward she stood in front of the bathroom mirror and told herself that she was a warrior. She decided that she wasn’t going anywhere. She put cancer on notice and told it, “I’m coming at you, and I’m coming at you with everything I’ve got!” She decided to let go of her fear, stand up, sword outstretched, and take aim at her disease. During her five years of treatment she wrote about her experiences, her victories, her setbacks, her ups and downs, and her hopes and dreams for the future. Most of all, she wanted to write of her love for her daughters, her husband, and her family. She intended to publish her writings in book form when she was declared cancer-free and to work as an advocate for other cancer patients, to help them through the maze of procedures and red tape, to give them hope, to inspire them to become the kind of fierce and determined warrior that she was.Heather did not live to fulfill her dream and publish this book, but her dad promised her that he would make it happen. This book represents the fulfillment of that promise. Heather’s family and friends trust that her words will encourage you and give you hope and determination, whether or not you are a cancer patient. Live as Heather did. Live each day to the fullest. Love to the maximum and beyond. Love yourself and nurture your body and your spirit. If you are knocked down, get up. Again and again and again. You are a warrior. You are a survivor. Sections of this book will make you laugh aloud. Others will bring you to tears. Heather’s wit, wisdom, courage, faith, hope, and love will certainly inspire you to live, love, hope, and believe as she did. “Life is to be enjoyed NOW. Tomorrow will wait. Each day is a celebration. Each day is a chance to get a running jump before hitting the slip-and-slide, a chance to jump in the leaves, a chance to roll down a hill, a chance to dance in the rain, a chance to take in all the small things…a chance to recognize the big things. We don’t wait “until” whatever to live. Living happens now. Hope happens NOW!” (From a talk on Hope which Heather delivered to the staff at Johns Hopkins’ Kimmel Cancer Center.) “I do not takemy tomorrows for granted. I wish I did, but I can’t. Ilive my todays like they are gifts. I love the people in my life with my wholeheart. I am not saving any of that heart for my tomorrows. Ilive now. I love now. I will love tomorrow when tomorrow’s sunrises, but for now I have today. I don’t wait to tell someone I lovethem. Tomorrow isn’t a better day for that – the time is rightnow. I hope that I will have a million tomorrows, but I don’t putliving or loving off. Be happy today. Embrace today. Hopefor tomorrow. We don’t get to freeze time. We don’t get to go back. We only go forward. That I am here forthis “now” is nothing short of a miracle. There are more magicalthings ahead. I don’t want to miss anything.I am not without fear, but my sense of courage, faith, and my unstoppable will have no bounds. I know that if I lose, I will still have won. I know that I will go down swinging. I know that I feast on lifeand suck every piece of joy that I can out of my days and nights with my family.I know that I am loved.” Heather Davis Johnson (1972-2016)
